October 17, 2013: New Trade Show Preview Attracts Exhibitors, Event Company Carves Niche in Tech, Why Preston Bailey Appreciates Carnations

1. NEW TRADE SHOW PREVIEW ATTRACTS EXHIBITORS: Plush, a consumer show of luxury children's products in Los Angeles, is starting a trade show next year at the World Market Center’s Pavilions in Las Vegas. The show is more than a year away, but its owner brought in potential exhibitors for a preview event this week. Las Vegas Review-Journal: "About 100 established manufacturers are coming this week to meet the Plush staff and determine whether the new trade show is something in which they’d like to participate. Plush aims to provide a focused show with about 200,000 square feet of leasable area." http://bit.ly/19SLQrI

2. EVENT COMPANY CARVES NICHE IN TECH: Kapow Events has found its niche by planning events for technology companies in Chicago. Instead of charging clients for its services, the firm charges venues a marketing fee for brining them the events. Like the clients it serves, Kapow uses data to track trends. Chicago Tribune: "the average dollar amount spent per attendee for client events is $178, the average number of attendees is 29 and the average number of days to plan a tech event is 49. Twenty-five percent of the tech company events take place on a Wednesday, and 71 percent of the events take place after 5 p.m. The average amount spent on these all events is $5,154, and 44 percent of tech events in Chicago are sporting events." http://bit.ly/16Oca3B

3. CARNATIONS: LOVE THEM OR LOATHE THEM AT EVENTS: A reader of Preston Bailey's blog asked his opinion of carnations, a flower she adored but her bride-to-be daughter disliked. Bailey shared his solution for working with the often-maligned floral. "As you may or may not know, carnations are a controversial topic in the flower industry, in that, people either love them or hate them. Most people hate them. To be honest with you, I was one of these people for many years until one day (very recently), I had a client who changed my mind." See the creation Bailey's team came up with: http://bit.ly/1eoVP6Z
