November 4, 2013: YouTube Debuts Messy, Fun Award Show, 'Star Wars' Theme Transforms Hockey Game, Cuba Closes Private Venues

1. YOUTUBE DEBUTS MESSY, FUN AWARD SHOW: No first-time event runs smoothly, and critics agreed YouTube’s entry into the awards genre was far from perfect, but the event held Sunday at New York’s Pier 36 had enough spontaneity and freshness to create its own niche. Billboard: “The YouTube Music Awards, despite its many awkward steps, proved itself a dance worth attending in its first year. The guerrilla-style affectations need to be smoothed-out, but for the most part, there was real electricity and a refreshing go-for-broke attitude at the ceremony. The 2013 YouTube Music Awards were far from stuffy, and with the right tweaks, next year's event could be required viewing.” See clips here: http://bit.ly/1e94iOv

2. HOCKEY PROMOTION TAKES ‘STAR WARS’ THEME TO NEW HEIGHTS: A hallmark of minor league sporting events is the promotions designed to entice fans to the games. This weekend, at a match between the Toledo Walleye and Kalamazoo Wings, saw the teams wear Star Wars-theme jerseys that resembled X-Wing pilot shirts and Darth Vader’s costume. Mashable: “The jerseys aren't just a fun stunt, though—the instant collectors' items will be auctioned post-game, with X-Wing proceeds benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Vader proceeds going toward the Wounded Warrior Project. Meanwhile, fans are welcome to come in Star Wars costume with a prize for best get-up. … The Stanley Cup trophy will also be present for photo ops on Saturday night. But that's a minor footnote on a night like this.” http://on.mash.to/18LfokF

3. CUBA CLOSES PRIVATELY RUN CINEMAS, OTHER VENUES: Associated Press: “The Cuban authorities are clamping down on the privately run cinemas and video game parlors that have mushroomed on the island recently, saying Saturday that the businesses are unauthorized and must be shuttered immediately. … Private theaters have become increasingly popular as an alternative to poorly maintained state-run cinemas, which tend to show more staid, highbrow fare.” http://nyti.ms/Hz9H3P
