July 11, 2017: Toronto International Film Festival Launches $3 Million Campaign to Support Female Filmmakers, Rihanna to Return to New York Fashion Week, Live Nation Launches Grassroots Music Venues Ticketing Website In Britain

1. TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL LAUNCHES $3 MILLION CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT FEMALE FILMMAKERS: In an effort to combat sexism in the film industry, the Toronto International Film Festival has launched a $3 million campaign that will support female filmmakers. Variety: “The five-year funding push will support a three-month residency program for female creators, develop a speaker series about gender equity and gender identities in film, and design classroom resources to help educators interested in the subject of women and gender in cinema. The move comes as women trail men in terms of representation behind the camera — only 7% of all directors working on the 250 highest-grossing domestic releases in 2016. That was a decline of two percentage points from the level achieved in 2015. There have been some gains, however. Patty Jenkins directed ‘Wonder Woman,’ a big-screen smash that is the highest grossing film ever overseen by a female filmmaker. The festival has also made strides to increase the representation of women. Nearly 30% of films at last year’s gathering were directed by women. ‘We acknowledge that gender inequity is systemic in the screen industries, so change has to happen at every level. That includes getting more women into key creative roles,’ said Cameron Bailey, the festival’s artistic director. ‘We plan to seek out, develop, and showcase top female talent in the industry through our festival and year-round initiatives. Our mission is to transform the way people see the world through film. One of the most powerful ways to do that is to foreground the perspectives of women.’” http://bit.ly/2u1k5wQ

2. RIHANNA TO RETURN TO NEW YORK FASHION WEEK: While many notable American brands won’t be participating in the next edition of New York Fashion Week, Rihanna is slated to return with her Fenty Puma by Rihanna collection. The singer first debuted the line with her first show at NYFW in fall 2016, and then showed off the collection in Paris during the last two seasons. Women’s Wear Daily: “Rihanna was unavailable for comment but Puma issued this statement: ‘After two successful seasons showing during Paris Fashion Week, Rihanna has decided to return to New York and show her Fenty Puma by Rihanna spring 2018 collection during NYFW, making this the first time she will present during September NYFW.’  Details of the date and location of the show have yet to be confirmed, but if the past is any indication, it will be one of the late shows with an elaborate set. Rihanna presented her first Fenty Puma collection at 23 Wall Street, followed by spring 2017 at Paris’ Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, and most recently at Bibliothèque Nationale de France for fall. Reportedly working with a different designer every season, including Adam Selman for spring, she’s veered in aesthetic from show to show—going from Japanese Goth to frilly 18th-century-inspired sport to stereotypical wayward schoolyard cliques—but always maintaining a sporty, gender-fluid baseline.” http://bit.ly/2tGTEu3

3. LIVE NATION LAUNCHES GRASSROOTS MUSIC VENUES TICKETING WEBSITE IN BRITAIN: TicketWeb, a division of Live Nation’s Ticketmaster, aims to support the grassroots music scene by paying a portion of each ticket price directly to the venue. Billboard: “Britain's ‘at risk’ grassroots music scene has received a shot in the arm from Live Nation with the launch of a bespoke ticketing service aimed at protecting the future of the sector. TicketWeb, a division of Live Nation-owned Ticketmaster, has partnered with the U.K. Music Venue Trust to run the GrassrootsVenues.Tickets website, which describes itself as ‘a resource for ethical ticketing.’ As part of that remit, each ticket purchased through the service contains a fixed donation of £0.50 ($0.64), which is paid directly to the venue. A small proportion of the site's 5 percent service charge goes to the Music Venue Trust to help fund national and local campaigning. The remainder of the service fee goes to Ticketweb, which receives £0.45 from every £10.00 ($13.00) ticket sale.” http://bit.ly/2sZWe1a
