January 17, 2019: Pelosi Asks Trump to Postpone State of the Union Amid Shutdown, Why New York Will Have Two Women's Marches, Instagram Influencer's Failed Event Tour Goes Viral

1. PELOSI ASKS TRUMP TO POSTPONE STATE OF THE UNION AMID SHUTDOWN: In a letter on Wednesday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi asked President Trump to postpone his State of the Union address, or deliver it in writing to Congress on January 29, amid security concerns over the government shutdown. The decision of when the address takes place is ultimately up to Pelosi. CNN: "The House and the Senate have to pass resolutions to actually green light the State of the Union. Neither have done so yet and Pelosi controls whether the House passes one at all. Other members of Democratic leadership took a more confrontational tone with Trump. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told CNN's At This Hour with Kate Bolduan that 'the State of the Union is off,' though his office later walked back his comments saying Hoyer 'mischaracterized' Pelosi's letter. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the chair of the House Democratic Caucus, tweeted 'Individual 1 will not be permitted to deliver his state of the union address until government is reopened. Welcome to life in the New Democratic Majority. Get used to it.'" https://cnn.it/2TVkRoE

2. WHY NEW YORK WILL HAVE TWO WOMEN'S MARCHES: Two groups organizing women's marches in New York have been fighting with each other for weeks. The issues stem from the question of inclusivity, specifically accusations of anti-Semitism against founders of the national Womenโ€™s March in Washington. Jewish organizations, civil rights groups, and other local Women's March organizations separated from the original event, which means two marches protesting the Trump administration will occur in Manhattan on Saturday. Originally, the only march in the city was organized by the Women's March Alliance, organized by Katherine Siemionko. In 2018, the New York chapter of the national Women's March began planning their own New York march for 2019. The New York Times: "Because the Alliance held the only parade permit that the police department would issue, one of the leaders of the National Womenโ€™s March group, Linda Sarsour, a Palestinian-American activist from Brooklyn, tried to join forces with the Alliance. But on a call in early October, Ms. Siemionko said, Ms. Sarsour was 'threatening' and tried to wrest control of the New York protest from her group. ... New Yorkโ€™s Jewish leaders, in particular, are conflicted because of the Womenโ€™s March NYCโ€™s connections to the organizationโ€™s leaders in Washington. Ms. Sarsourโ€™s resolute position defending the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement in protest against Israelโ€™s occupation of Palestine has proved problematic for some." https://nyti.ms/2Cu75Cj

3. INSTAGRAM INFLUENCER'S FAILED EVENT TOUR GOES VIRAL: Instagram influencer Caroline Calloway has more than 83,000 followers on the platform, and was slated to have a national "creativity" tour for her followersโ€”essentially bringing her app aesthetic to life. But over the course of two days, Calloway canceled her tour after it was criticized as a scam and refunded $165 to those who purchased tickets. The event fail went viral after it was reported on Twitter by Scottish journalist Kayleigh Donaldson, who warned the tour was a scam. NBC News: "It all began in December, when Calloway started selling tickets to fans for stops around the U.S. where she would teach a 'creativity workshop.' However, her Instagram stories showed signs that Calloway was in over her head in trying to quickly plan a national tour, even though she had already collected money from her fans. ... Calloway didnโ€™t have some venues booked for upcoming dates. She abruptly canceled some stops. Calloway learned that making the vegan salad she promised proved difficult when it was for 50 people. The flower crowns she talked about on the Eventbrite website, where she sold tickets, turned out to just be a flower clip each attendee placed in their hair for a photo with Calloway before giving it back, according to attendees. And those personal letters she promised each fan? They were too time consuming. Calloway did, however, manage to write an affirmation in each attendeeโ€™s journal, which was part of the gift bag they were promised." https://nbcnews.to/2FEHNEA
