Liz Smith's Event Review

"The ballroom of the Waldorf has never looked as gorgeous as it did for this week's Museum of Television & Radio salute to the Hallmark Hall of Fame. Fabulous low arrangements of pink, white, purple small lilies on each table under-lit by low candles. Just magic."

That's Liz Smith describing the museum's benefit in her column on Friday. But her mini-review wasn't all glowing. The seriousness of the Hallmark works made the speeches too serious, and she couldn't hear them anyway. "You can't do heavy duty chats in the Waldorf ballroom," Smith wrote. "No one past the third row of tables can hear the speakers well enough. I didn't understand one word said by Barbara Walters, Hume Cronyn, Joanne Woodward, Bob Batscha, Frank Bennack, et al. They all talked and talked, but nobody at my table could get the message."

Still, in grand Smith style, she raved about the event as a whole, calling it "a fun cocktail gabfest."
