Incentive Spending Shifts

News from the Incentive Travel & Meeting Executives show and the nearby Motivation Show suggests that incentive buyers may be shifting their dollars from travel to merchandise, according to meeting industry Web site StarCite.com. The site reports that business was slow for many of the 60 international meeting and travel destinations exhibiting, although hotel representatives from locations including Great Britain, Brazil and Chile reported booking meetings or group business. Meanwhile, the merchandise side of the shows was doing brisk business.

Attendance was down about 20 percent from the events' pre-registration level of 21,052. Exhibitors said fewer delegates were walking the aisles, and noted that the large delegations companies have sent in the past have been replaced by one or two company representatives this year. Although Starcite reports that show organizers never considered cancelling or postponing the event, about 100 of the more than 2,000 exhibitors cancelled.
