Check out the cinematic masterpiece The Leopard during its brief revival at Film Forum (212.727.8110) January 12 to 20. This 1963 epic from director Luchino Visconti, starring Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon, and Claudia Cardinale, is akin to an Italian Gone With the Wind with its sweeping historical scope. Focusing on the quest for a united Italy in the 1860’s, the film shows the class struggle and the decay of the aristocracy with acute attention to detail—especially during a grand ball scene that lasts almost an hour and shows off lavish costumes and stately interiors. —Mark Mavrigian
