New York Beard Nominees Keller, Meyer, Per Se

On April 6, the James Beard Foundation announced its 2005 nominees for awards to be presented at the 15th annual awards gala on May 2 at the New York Marriott Marquis. New York nominees include Daniel Boulud, Thomas Keller, Danny Meyer, and Drew Nieporent (four of the five nominees in the outstanding restaurateur category); Per Se and Spice Market (best new restaurant); and Joseph Bastianich of Italian Wine Merchants and Dale DeGroff of King Cocktail (outstanding wine and spirits professional).

Chef Jacques Pépin will receive the 2005 lifetime achievement award, and five industry veterans will be inducted into the Contessa Premium Foods Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America: Bastianich, co-owner of Italian Wine Merchants and Babbo, Becco, Lupa, Esca, and Bistro du Vent; Greg Drescher, senior director for strategic initiatives at the Culinary Institute of America; Carol Field, author and food writer; Corby Kummer, senior editor at The Atlantic Monthly; and Deborah Madison, chef, cookbook author, and journalist.

More than 1,600 food and beverage industry leaders are expected to attend, despite the foundation’s tarnished reputation after former president Len Pickell pleaded guilty in January to stealing $50,000 from the nonprofit. The ceremony and reception theme will be a tribute to Julia Child and will feature dishes prepared by more than 30 chefs. Good Morning America cohost Charles Gibson will serve as master of ceremonies. The complete list of nominees is on the foundation's Web site.
