Last night we stopped by New York magazine's offices for a getting-to-know-you cocktail party, hosted by the mag's special events and PR department. It was for PR folks for restaurants, bars, and products that might benefit from participating in the magazine's events, like its Taste of New York food event and its big bridal showcase. "It's always better to put a name with a face, and we're thinking that once we have met these folks, we can have an easier time building relationships with them that will be mutually beneficial," said special events director Erica Morris. The event had a shoestring budget, with donations from Creative Edge Parties (food), the Magic Hat Brewing Company (beer), Red Diamond (wine), and San Faustino (water).
The mag's conference room, lined with blowups of past covers—this week's shot at Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes was a hot topic of discussion—created a fun, casual environment. "Everyone was very social, but got down to business quickly," Morris said. The strategic meeting went so well, she's thinking of doing more. "We want to target different people next time, get more people in travel, or automotive—the categories that will help the magazine's events, and potentially help [ad] sales as well," she said.
