We stopped by Marquee last week for a party celebrating Nascar Nextel Cup Series champion Tony Stewart. Attendees—Nascar drivers, crew members, and car owners, and celebrity fans like Bruce Willis, Chris Tucker, and American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis—entered the space under a white fabric canopy stretched over 10th Avenue, where the Strategic Group projected a Nascar checkerboard in white light onto a partially closed lane. We admit we’re not fans of the sport ourselves, but its revenue is stratospheric—more than $3 billion annually. “Who else could afford to close Marquee on a Thursday night?” said club co-owner Noah Tepperberg. (The party closed the club to the public until 4 AM—a rare event.)
