1. MARATHON CANCELED: Late Friday afternoon, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the ING New York City Marathon would not be held Sunday, a reversal of the decision made earlier in the week that he said had become "a source of controversy and division." Associated Press: "'We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it," the mayor said in a statement. "We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event—even one as meaningful as this—to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track.'" http://apne.ws/SF3hSX
Earlier in the day, Ad Age reported that consumers were starting to criticize the marathon's sponsors for being involved, posting photos of Hurricane Sandy's damage on Facebook and making angry comments via Twitter. http://bitly.com/RAtz4o
The marathon’s organizer, the New York Road Runners, blamed the need to cancel the event on the media, not the storm. New York Post: http://bit.ly/TBQxwi
While marathon organizers and Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson said last week that assets from the canceled event would be distributed to help residents affected by the hurricane, 19 generators that were to be used for the marathon were left unused and not put toward powering homes. New York Post: http://bit.ly/TpT9Le
We’ll continue to track the event hosts’ decisions to cancel or move forward with events this week, as well as other effects of the storm. Let us know what you’re doing: [email protected].

2. ELECTION NIGHT DETAILS STILL MUM: The Chicago Tribune: “While President Barack Obama's re-election campaign is planning a private party in McCormick Place for supporters on election night, plans for a smattering of open gatherings are beginning to emerge in the final days of the presidential race. An immigration rights group is planning a march and vigil outside the sprawling convention center...CNN is working out details with state officials to hold a viewing party they can televise in the plaza of the James R. Thompson Center in the Loop...They plan to put up a jumbo TV screen in the plaza for people to watch. City officials have made no announcements about using public spaces downtown as gathering places for Obama supporters who don't have tickets to McCormick Place. They have referred all questions to the president's re-election campaign, which has been mum on whether there are any such plans.” http://trib.in/SJ1PPy
3. EXPANDED TEDTALKS: TED and the Huffington Post are expanding the format of the famous TEDTalks by enabling listeners to continue the discussions online in TEDWeekends. Huffington Post: "TEDTalks are famously limited to 18 minutes, but the essence of TEDWeekends is that when the TEDTalk ends, the evolution of the idea begins. So along with the TEDTalk you'll see blog posts written by others giving their own take. We're also inviting graphic artists to illustrate the essence of an idea visually. Meanwhile, the speaker behind the talk will be online chipping in to the conversation." http://huff.to/SEnnNe
4 MOBILE APP SUCCESS?: the carmaker will soon find out if that investment was worth it. The app will be tied into the company's Born Electric event November 13-18 in New York, which will showcase BMW's eco-friendly i3 and i8 Concept models. AdWeek: "MyCityWay users in New York who do not attend the event will still see the BMW brand in the lower right-hand corner of the app. The show will also get pushed on the app’s event schedule and the local map when users are near midtown. 'There are two levels to the targeting: [general] prospects in New York and customers at the actual show,' said MyWayCity CEO Puneet Mehta. 'BMW can send attendees push alerts via the app if they opt in. The content the brand pushes out can be changed regularly. We are starting to bring these brands onto our platform and selling targeted reach.'” http://bit.ly/SLsMQ8
5. TWITTER, FILTERED: Twitter is planning to launch a service to compete with Instagram that would allow users to put filters on the photos they post to the social media site. And the company may also attempt to compete with another social site: "Twitter is exploring adding other tools to its mobile applications, one employee said, including the ability to upload and possibly edit videos without having to go through a third-party application or service, like YouTube."
