July 20, 2016: One Millennial Group Plans to Watch Olympics on Actual Television, Twitter Scores Original Programming Deal With N.B.A., Panorama Promoter Discusses Festival’s Ticket Sales and Tech Appeal

1. ONE MILLENNIAL GROUP PLANS TO WATCH OLYMPICS ON ACTUAL TELEVISION: There will be a variety of streaming options to view the upcoming Summer Olympics in Rio and, aside from the opening ceremonies, NBC plans to air primetime events live on television. Despite the fact that many millennials consume content through laptops and mobile devices, a recent survey found that a majority of women in the demographic plan to watch events the old-fashioned way. Adweek: “Influenster, whose 2 million members are comprised mostly of millennial women, surveyed 3,992 women around the age of 25 to find out their viewing habits for the upcoming games. The product discovery and reviews platform found that the overwhelming majority of millennial women that plan to watch the Olympics will do so in front of the television (75 percent) instead of livestreaming the competition (18 percent). Overall, more than half (54 percent) of millennial women surveyed are planning to watch any coverage from Rio. Airing on a tape delay hasn't hampered NBC's ability to pull in gigantic ratings—NBC averaged north of 30 million viewers for its primetime coverage from London in 2012. In fact, Jim Bell, NBC's executive producer for its Olympics coverage, has argued that the decision to make every sport live on a digital platform has actually increased TV viewership. But for NBC, being able to have big-ticket Olympic sports like swimming, diving, track and field, beach volleyball and gymnastics airing in the moment instead of on a delay should only further boost viewership. It should come as no surprise then that many of the American athletes that millennial women are most aware of, or at least the ones they follow on social media, participate in those major events.” http://bit.ly/29TVJKF

2. TWITTER SCORES ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING DEAL WITH N.B.A: Twitter has made headlines lately for announcements that it will stream a variety of sporting events. Now, the social platform has signed a deal with the N.B.A. to stream two new original live shows and additional programming. Los Angeles Times: "One of the shows will be a weekly live-streamed NBA pregame show that will be available exclusively via Twitter. The league is to announce another show before the start of the 2016-2017 season that will also be exclusive to Twitter. Through the partnership, the NBA will also create additional video for Twitter, Vine and Periscope. Both the NBA and Twitter declined to comment on the terms of the deal. This deal continues Twitter’s foray into live-streaming sports. Analysts said live-streaming events, especially sports, is a way for Twitter to attract new users and advertisers. 'Sports typically does really well on Twitter,' said Neil Doshi, senior analyst at Mizuho Securities USA. 'I think marrying the live video plus the ability to tweet with their friends … on sporting events is a unique match.' http://lat.ms/29SF2iX

3. PANORAMA PROMOTER DISCUSSES FESTIVAL’S TICKET SALES AND TECH APPEAL: First-year festival Panorama makes its debut in New York this weekend, bringing acts such as Kendrick Lamar and LCD Soundsystem to Randall’s Island Park. The festival isn’t expected to sell out, but what sets it apart is a visual, tech-focused exhibition space. Promoter Paul Tollett spoke more about the inaugural event. The New York Times: “Mr. Tollett declined to specify how many tickets Panorama has sold so far, but its performance will be closely watched as a bellwether for what has quickly become a hypercompetitive festival market in New York. Governors Ball, which began five years ago as a modest one-day event put on by three 20-somethings, has become a nationally known festival luring stars like Kanye West and the Strokes to Randalls Island, and this year it was acquired by Live Nation Entertainment, the global concert giant. Panorama is part of the portfolio of AEG Live, the corporate rival of Live Nation, and the competition between the two mega-promoters is in some ways a symbolic showdown for the concert business, which is now dominated by big festivals across the country. One sign of the stakes? Panorama’s arrival led to a lobbying war over the last year that resulted in the festival’s being blocked from its intended home at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. …’We have some things that we’re bringing in that are really going to turn heads, like the technology. We have this thing called the Lab. It’s a very large dome inside where technology exhibits are going to be. There’s a lady named Emilie Baltz who has the Cotton Candy Theremin. It projects onto the dome, and it’s interacting with sound and visuals. People are going to see that and think, ‘I want to see that each year.’’” http://nyti.ms/29Thmhh
