Gear magazine celebrated its sponsorship of the Freedom Tour 2000, a cross-country motorcycle ride, with a loud, smoky party at Centro-Fly. The hot Chelsea club has hosted numerous fashion shoots since opening in December 1999, drawing photographers including Steven Meisel with its striking 70's decor--red vinyl couches, lots of mirrors and clear plastic walls with peek-a-boo cut-outs.
As Bob Guccione Jr., who founded the young men's magazine, sat in one of the club's lounge rooms, kids danced to pumping music from Layo and Bushwacka! under the spiral-patterned ceiling, near bikes from Indian Motorcycle. The older suits crowded the club's numerous bars, manned by employees in black Gear T-shirts. (The shirts were also in the gift bag, along with some stickers and a promotional CD-ROM for Road Trip, the puke-out humor Tom Green movie.)
The most striking thing about the club's food was that it was all touched with red--goat cheese with red peppers on small toast, tiny pizza slices (with red tomato sauce) and red tortilla chips. But people don't go to Centro-Fly for the food. They go because, for now, it's red hot.
