Checks of a different sort were placed on the tables at Tavern on the Green for the opening night party for Oklahoma!--gingham-checked tablecloths, to be exact. The cute country d?cor was meant to evoke the look of the famous Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that's back on Broadway.
The evening's Midwestern motif--the brainchild of megamusical producer Cameron Mackintosh--was brought to life by Susan Edgar Designs, and coordinated by Tobak-Dantchik Events & Promotions (an event company that does lots of Broadway openings). In addition to the blue, green, red and yellow checked tablecloths, swags of burlap were draped in the entryway, and butter churns, bales of hay and stalks of dried corn were placed throughout Tavern's many rooms. Bouquets of wildflowers, including daisies and sunflowers, adorned tables. "Everything's authentic," event planner Suzanne Tobak told us. "There's nothing fancy, because that's not what [the show's characters] would have had."
After the show's opening night performance, 1,200 guests--including real-life Oklahoma governor Frank Keating, Oklahoma! stars Patrick Wilson and Andrea Martin, and New Yorkers Susan Lucci, Donald Trump and Barbara Walters--dined on an impressive array of Oklahoman cuisine (otherwise known as a blend of comfort food and Tex-Mex). Bulging buffet tables held everything from corn bread, coleslaw and corn and black bean salad to baby back ribs, roast Oklahoma filet of beef and buttermilk-fried chicken.
