Club Kids Come Out for Party Premiere

September 10, 2003
Monsters only come out at night—especially when there's a movie to promote, an after-party and a busy dance floor. Party Monster—a film about New York's infamous, drug-addled club kids in the 80's and 90's—premiered with a screening at Loews 19th Street and an after-party at Plaid, the club in the former Spa space.
Hosted by film production companies ContentFilm, Killer Films, Strand Releasing and World of Wonder and the soundtrack's record label TVT Soundtrax, the event was all about the party people. After a quick stroll down the red carpet, the cast—Seth Green, comeback kid Macaulay Culkin and Chloe Sevigny, among others—warmed up to Plaid’s surroundings as they mingled and schmoozed with the colorful alumni of the notorious nightclub Limelight. Event production company On 3 Productions worked with longtime party promoter Suzanne Bartsch to bring in the club kids (some way past retirement) to set the backdrop for this celebratory occasion, so décor was minimal. Dancing queens and costumed clubbers paid homage to the film's energetic era and donned everything from an outfit made of sewn-together Hello Kitty dolls, to yards of vinyl and 12-inch platform heels. Glitter, face paint, and miles of false eyelashes can do a party good.

Logos of event sponsors Diesel and Nylon were projected onto the club's bare walls, and when partygoers lost sight of the film's stars they could get their fix by viewing snippets of the movie on large screens in both rooms of the club. Meanwhile, the bold and the brave stepped up to the Manic Panic makeover stations for a quick rainbow-colored touch-up, and hairstylists sculpted and colored many a silver mohawk. It's safe to say some came to the party with brown hair and left with blue.

The musical stylings of DJ Unknown? of Fischerspooner
filled the air, and consequently the dance floors. When dancing took its toll, guests could refuel at Cosi’s buffet-style snack set-ups of sandwiches and s'mores. Patrons in need of a sugar rush gathered 'round the fire to roast a marshmallow treat or partake from the bowls of candy strategically placed close to the dance floor. Pleasure-seekers also sipped the "Razz Monster" specialty drink: Bacardi's .phpberry rum with club soda and grenadine.

Partygoers, monsters and talent alike sauced up the scene way past midnight. On 3 sent revelers home with a gimmicky arrangement of party favors including Manic Panic cosmetics and hair dye, Silhouette sunglasses (for bloodshot eyes, no doubt), Alizadarik cuff bracelets, Americana Couture T-shirts and Altoids (for booze breath).
