1. APPLE MUSIC FESTIVAL GIVES VENUE A GREEN UPGRADE: For this year’s Apple Music Festival, which runs through Monday, the event gave host venue the Roundhouse a makeover to make it more environmentally friendly. The festival described the eco-upgrades in a F.A.Q. section on its website: “To show our love, we’re even giving the 168-year-old building an environmental makeover. We’re making major upgrades to the lighting, plumbing, and HVAC systems; installing recycling and composting bins; arranging to turn used fryer oil into biofuel; buying renewable energy credits to cover the Roundhouse's September electricity use; and offering reusable water bottles instead of plastic ones. We expect these improvements to reduce the Roundhouse’s annual carbon emissions by 60 tons, save 60,000 gallons of water a year, and divert more than 1,600 kilograms of waste from landfills.” Mashable: http://on.mash.to/1FrSB4h
2. FEMALE FILMMAKERS UNDERREPRESENTED AT FILM FESTIVALS: A review of films screened at this year’s Venice and Toronto film festivals revealed that films made by women were underrepresented. Data visualization site the Silk compiled the research and said it plans to continue the research for events including the Sundance Film Festival, South by Southwest, and major award shows. The Guardian: “[The] research has established that women film-makers are being sidelined in selection for major film festivals, even in programmes expressly designed to nurture emerging talent.” http://bit.ly/1MoHgBV
3. WHAT THE POPE’S VISIT MEANS FOR PHILADELPHIA’S ABILITY TO HOST BIG EVENTS: Philadelphia has hosted big events, but perhaps none as big as the World Meeting of Families and its featured guest: Pope Francis. Officials will measure not only the number of people who attend—around 1.5 million people are expected for Mass on Sunday—but the economic impact of the event. CityLab: “Given his South American bonafides and celebrity status, plus Philly’s demographics—to say nothing of the $420 million in hotel and restaurant sales that his visit may generate—Pope Francis could set a record for Philadelphia events. In fact, the record restaurant projections and hotel occupancy rates may outpace what the Democratic National Convention will bring to the city in 2016. (The Republican National Convention generated $345 million for Philadelphia in 2000, Forbes reports.) A successful papal exhibition may be what that the National Football League needs to decide on Philly for the Super Bowl in 2019.” http://bit.ly/1KM4LFI
4. WHITE HOUSE OPENS PERISCOPE ACCOUNT TO LIVE STREAM POPE’S ARRIVAL: More than 11,000 viewers tuned in to watch the White House’s first post to Periscope: a live broadcast of Pope Francis arriving in the United States and greeting President Obama. TechCrunch: “Twitter, which owns Periscope, is hoping to capitalize on coverage of his visit. The company announced three different emoji that can be used to track the pope’s movements in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York.” http://tcrn.ch/1OR81kQ
