Brands Bedeck EW Emmy Party

As is typical of the magazine’s parties, sponsorship deals meant signage galore.

February 23, 2006
The Entertainment Weekly party the night before the Emmy awards is like a rehearsal for the next night's battery of post-ceremony bashes, but it's not a dress rehearsal. No floor-length gowns were anywhere to be seen, but a sea of low-rise jeans flooded the new Cabana Club, which has taken over the cavernous Hollywood space formerly occupied by the Sunset Room. Cavernous or not, most of the 1,200 partiers forwent the two indoor dance floors in favor of heavy schmoozing outside.
EW director of special events Sheila Kelly oversaw the party, working with Gary Levitt of Sequoia Productions. Sequoia's Cheryl Cecchetto said her group designed the evening around one idea: "Fast forward with EW." Cecchetto found slanted highball glasses that projected speed at Unique Party Rentals and used a palette of futuristic colors—all sorts of metallics against black.

The venue was shared with three sponsors—Revlon, Diet Coke, and LG phones—each of which had its own lounge and color scheme. Sponsors’ signage and colors dominated the club. Overlooking the dance floor inside the main section of the venue, dubbed "Club EW," was a lounge with black furniture, topped with bronze pillows emblazoned with the magazine’s logo. On the wall of another lounge abutting the round dance floor was a giant photo of Revlon spokeswoman Kate Bosworth surrounded by makeup artists. The Revlon lounge spilled out onto a patio, where party consultant Keith Greco enclosed two chandeliers in giant lampshades decorated with Revlon lip glosses arranged in a chevron pattern.

Guests mingled among the club’s titular cabanas, which surrounded a moat that wove beneath a complex of bridges. Cecchetto bathed the intimate seating areas in warm rose light with the magazine's logo written in white light. Floating in the moat were mini-barges with Duraflame logs or pink and red roses topped with candles. A collection of well-known DJs—Vice,
Cassidy, Sky Nellor, and Benji Madden—kept the crowd entertained inside and out. A wall of plasma screens above one of the outdoor bars showed the stream of red carpet arrivals just outside. The party was visible from blocks away, with Entertainment Weekly covers projected over the main outdoor bar as well as on a multistory screen on a garage across the street.
