Years in the making, the Sports Museum of America finally opens today. Despite a move (from 25 Broadway to a site across the street) and a name change (from the National Sports Museum), the finished downtown facility remains fairly close to the original plans, including a permanent residence for the Heisman Trophy. Billed as the first and only museum in the United States to showcase national athletic interests, history, and culture, this institution features artifacts, photographs, and films from sports like baseball, football, tennis, and golf.
Within the 45,000-square-foot museum is 8,000 square feet of dedicated event space. Situated on the second floor, the section has a separate entrance at street level, a prefunction area, a greenroom, and access to the exhibition floor. The main room is a flexible space with polished concrete floors, white columns, and windows that overlook the surrounding area, including Battery Park. A colorful mural from artist LeRoy Neiman runs the length of one wall, adjacent to which is a prefunction room decorated with sports-inspired artwork. Downstairs, next to the main entrance, is the museum's store, which is available for small events such as book signings.
The museum's event space seats 500 theater-style or 175 classroom-style or holds 600 for receptions. Restaurant Associates handles the catering for the venue.
