The New York Times has crowned the latest celebrity florist: Saundra Parks, the owner of floral design company the Daily Blossom and "perhaps the top pick among African-American celebrities," according to a story on the front page of Sunday's Styles section. The piece cites Parks' clients Maya Angelou, Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson and Lauryn Hill, as well as her work for Jay-Z's album release party at Lotus, which she filled with red candles and candle holders, fiery amaryllis and burgundy roses. Hip-hop stars "want the best, whatever that is," she says. "They're into opulence and grandness and elegance."
The Times calls Parks' style "neither avant-garde nor country-basket chic," and describes "her distinctive palette: deep, jewel tones that are masculine enough to make an NFL running back swoon and rich color bursts of petals that might have sprung from the pages of a Toni Morrison novel."
Parks already seems ready to take advantage of such purple prose and perhaps expand her business beyond just flowers. "I always tell people I'm not in the flower business," she says. "I'm in the emotion business." Spoken like someone ready for some Martha Stewart-style personal branding.
