Following the final performance of Cats, the producers threw a so-called "Jellicle Ball" at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers. The large, classy venue's waterfront location was a great place to watch a fireworks show produced by Fireworks by Grucci, and accompanied by--you guessed it--"Memory." Guests could also watch the show from the Horizon, a yacht docked next to the pier.
Both the yacht and the ballroom were filled with colorful flower arrangements by Susan Edgar Design. Tables draped with metallic tablecloths featured floral centerpieces arranged with colorful ribbons and disposable cameras featuring the Cats logo (from Fairworld Inc.). The venue's in-house caterer, Fine Food by Abigail Kirsch, prepared an extensive buffet of various types of foods. Tobak-Dantchik Events & Promotions, an event firm known for doing many high-profile theater events, coordinated the entire event.
Among the about 1,400 guests, we spotted Betty Buckley and hordes of other former cats, although composer Andrew Lloyd Webber didn't show. After attending the final performance, he skipped the party in order to fly back to London. He probably landed about the same time we hailed a cab, after hiking through the construction along the West Side Highway. Just asking: Chelsea Piers has some great spaces, but it's too bad it's so hard to enter and exit the complex right now.
