It's impressive to enter an event being saluted by an honor guard, and the USS Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum's Fleet Week gala even had two. The event's honoree, Vornado Realty CEO Steve Roth, and honored guests including Mayor Rudy Giuliani and some U.S. Congressmen got a full-dress salute. Meanwhile, the rest of the large group of guests in black-tie (many of them military and real estate elite) went up another gang plank and were greeted by sailors in white.
The 900-square-foot space, with its various halls filled with military memorabilia, can be used for small seminars as well as gatherings for as many as 2,500. This night all three of the main areas of the 42,000-ton vessel were used for cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvres, but--as usual--most people seem to crowd into one. Later, in the huge dining room area (capacity: 1,000), a naval band played for guests during dinner.
The museum's contract caterer, Restaurant Associates, provided a menu that included a crudites, cheese straws and tapenade for the 900 guests. For dinner the main course was filet of beef with Peruvian purple potatoes. The small centerpiece bouquets were from Ariston Florist.
Guests raved about the museum's intriguing activities including its flight simulators. But keep one thing in mind for attendees: getting a cab on the Westside Highway along Pier 86 is a bit of a challenge.
