Ahoy, Matey! Crystal Ball Recreates Cruise Ship Experience

The annual Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital fund-raiser featured colourfully lit sails, nautical table decor, and a feast fit for a ship's captain.

June 7, 2007
Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital’s seventh annual Crystal Ball, held in a tent from Regal Tent Productions in the parking lot of sponsor Boehringer Ingelheim, was a cruise ship themed affair titled the SS Crystal Ball. Planners from In Any Event! Meeting and Event Planners helmed the party for 650, which featured a gourmet feast fit for a captain’s dinner table. The fund-raiser began with a reception and silent auction in the Boehringer Ingelheim corporate office. Appetizers from caterer Gourmet Cuisine included Louisiana crab cakes and Peking duck crepes with honey hoisin sauce. Audiovisual company Straight Street Services created a mock lightning storm to signal the start of the main meal, and volunteers from Boehringer Ingelheim ushered attendees along a tented corridor to the dinner tent.
Chair-man Mills provided round dining tables, clear chiavari chairs, and navy blue windowpane table linens. Blossoms & Brant Florists supplied white floral centerpieces with blue LED lights. Once the guests were seated, a fleet of caterwaiters swung into action, delivering a salad trio of Caesar cannolis; English cucumber cups with citrus oregano dressing over tomato, feta, and red onion; and tomato bocconcini with torn basil and balsamic drizzle. The main course featured a grilled Provimi veal chop with potatoes and vegetables in a four-mushroom ragout. The meal concluded with a reappearance of the colourful caterwaiter team displaying servings of flaming baked Alaska, which were delivered to each guest for dessert. .

Throughout dinner, Straight Street lit a backdrop of sails on the stage in bright continuously changing colours.

Here’s what floral designers are working with this season.
“Dried flowers are coming back this year after a long hiatus. They will be popular for design due to their longevity, deep rich colors and added visual texture. Among the many popular dried flowers making a comeback are mini pampas grass, star grass, avena and helichrysum, which will be a popular species that designers are leaning towards integrating into arrangements with live flowers.” —Seth Pearsoll, director of design, shows and events for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (Pictured: The Samantha from East Olivia's spring collection)
