1. 'TIMES' CONFERENCE TOO  CHUMMY?: New York Times public editor Margaret Sullivan has some reservations about the paper's inaugural DealBook conference on Wednesday: "Here is what the invitation-only conference had going for it: Big Wall Street names, flashy graphics, edgy Global Chill music, weighty discussions of economic challenges, a few good laughs and even some news tidbits. And, with the pricey tickets and the all-platforms-blazing corporate sponsorships, the event brought in plenty of much-needed revenue for The Times. Here is what the conference did not have going for it: A great deal of distance between sources and those who cover them—something traditionally thought to be a bedrock journalistic idea." http://nyti.ms/SXzViA

2. GOOGLE EVENT TOOLS: The search engine is upgrading its social network to improve events management. TechCrunch: "Another area Google has focused on is Events, with updates aimed at making event planning easier. G+ users can now send messages through Events to specific guests and see who’s opened their invites. Guests can be invited through Google+ or by copying the URL of the event into an email or IM, plus guests can R.S.V.P. with the number of people they’re bringing. Events can also be duplicated to make it easier to create future Events." http://tcrn.ch/Uh10uJ

3. SUNDAY SHOPTALK: Event planner Bronson van Wyck shares his Sunday routine with The New York Times, which includes shoptalk: "I’m dying to hear about other people’s parties. If someone says, 'You wouldn’t believe the party I was at last night,' I’ll say, 'Tell me; I have to know.'" http://nyti.ms/ZD2hCx

In Chicago, meanwhile, the Sun-Times spends Sunday with event planner Debi Lilly of A Perfect Event: http://bit.ly/T282Vf

4. SMELL OF SHANIA: Country singer Shania Twain has created a full sensory experience for people who come to her shows during her residency at Caesars Palace Colosseum. Billboard: "Inspired by the practice of large Vegas hotels to infuse the air with a subliminal scent, Twain's show subtly transitions from her own fragrance (available for purchase in the gift shop) to a saloon scent (leathery and vintage, said show producer Raj Kapoor), to the smell of a campfire." http://bit.ly/SEmTbC
