Perched high on the 18th floor of the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica, the Penthouse offers one of the best ocean views in town—and it’s not even on the beach. You can enter the new restaurant through the hotel elevator or via a glass elevator from the street, which adds just the right amount of anticipation for what’s in store. Designer Thomas Schoos has updated the former Toppers space with soft blues and shimmery metallics, white walls and gauzy curtains. From happy hour on, the indoor private cabana tables fill up fast, but the oval bar in the center of the room, the low-slung lounge furniture, and the fireplace lounge are perfect for the overflow. The dining room wraps around the building and offers views of the ocean, mountains, and city, all the way past downtown; some areas can be used as private dining spaces. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the lounge is open late-night. Chef Michael Reidt offers a seasonal, modern American menu. —Lesley Balla
