Italian fine jewelry company Damiani threw a chic party and photography exhibit at Sky Studios to celebrate the launch of the company's foray into U.S. markets. Many of the partygoers--namely the jewelry industry folk--were early arrivals who came directly from the JA New York jewelry trade show at the Javits Center. The rest of the crowd was made up of press and friends of Damiani.
We heard a lot of oohs and ahhs both over the jewels and venue itself. Upon exiting the elevator on the 10th floor of the building, guests saw the kitchen first. This first level of the venue holds a penthouse filled with an eclectic mix of living room furniture, including leather easy chairs, a huge sofa, a bed seat and a baby grand piano. DJ Christopher Graham spun a mix of progressive dance music and classic Italian songs on this floor.
A staircase to the 11th floor penthouse first led guests into a small garden that opens to a large, airy room with two glass walls that swing out like doors. This room, with lots of white wall space and natural light, is where Damiani displayed some pieces from their fall collection and a photography exhibit of the company's fall 2001 advertising campaign, shot by Peter Lindbergh. The exhibit featured photos of Nastassja Kinski, Milla Jovovich and Damiani spokesmodel Chiara Mastroianni, daughter of Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni.
The third floor of the venue has a hardwood deck with a cobalt-blue tiled swimming pool. Tentation, who also did the catering, floated clear plastic globes with white orchid blooms in the pool. A steep spiraling stairwell from the pool level led to a rooftop terrace, which offered a breathtaking view of the East Village and NoHo.
