While Hairspray was cleaning up at the Tony awards at Radio City Music Hall, the Marriott Marquis was abuzz with final preparations to host the awards' official after-party, known as the Tonys' supper ball. For the fifth year, the event was produced by Tobak-Dantchik Events & Promotions, who took over the fifth and sixth floors of the hotel for the event.
Last year, Tobak-Dantchik altered the format of the after-party by having a buffet-style dinner at Rockefeller Center, a deviation from the usual three-course sit-down affair of past years. The more informal format made it easy for guests to mingle, and event producer Suzanne Tobak said she wanted to bring that feeling to this venue. "We wanted to create a sense of movement by creating a lounge. So in addition to sitting down and having a three-course dinner, there was an opportunity [for guests] to visit with friends in the theatrical community instead of just their seatmates," Tobak said. "People had been sitting in the music hall for four hours. We didn't want to make them sit for two more."
To create an area for mingling, Susan Edgar filled the lobby of the sixth floor ballroom with red lounge furniture, including bed seats, benches and sofas. Aquariums filled with white pillar candles gave the room a warm glow in addition to a flood of red lights.
To alleviate traffic on the sixth floor, event staff handled credentials, goodie bags and guest relations on the fifth floor. After checking in, guests took escalators to the sixth floor Broadway Ballroom, where dinner and dancing to the New York Dream Band awaited them.
In addition to producing the Tonys ball, Tobak-Dantchik also planned the after-parties for Hairspray at Bryant Park Grill, and Movin' Out at the China Club. The cast and crew of Take Me Out and La Boheme gathered at Show; the Palm West Side hosted a party for Long Day's Journey Into Night; the Nine crew feted Jane Krakowski's win at Cafe Un Deux Trois; and Gallagher's Steak House hosted both Bill Maher and the cast and crew of Enchanted April.
