Breaking away from the all-red decor popping up at many events, Sex and the City's season premiere party—known for sexy, colorful decor in past years—went across the color wheel for a lime-green look. The American Museum of Natural History's recently renovated Milstein Hall of Ocean Life (aka the Whale Room) was a sea of green from the bars to the buffets, but the room's focal point was the museum's permanent exhibits. The source of many "oohs and aahs" was the giant whale replica that Bentley Meeker lit in moving green lights, and more than one guest stopped to read the blurbs about various sea creatures.
HBO's director of media relations for special events Angela Lomascolo coordinated the party, and event designer Carter Field (who created an electric blue scene last year and an all-pink party in 2001) devised the green theme. Field covered tables with lime green fabric and matching chair covers lined with crystal beads. Variety played out in the centerpieces as Field used green glass vases in different shapes to hold flower and branch arrangements. Votive candles in different green-beaded holders also decorated the tables. Meeker used more green lighting to highlight the large central bar and buffet stations, but used a more flattering off-white lighting at tables where guests were dining.
Green was on the menu, too. Caterwaiters—attired in matching black suits with green undershirts—passed trays of key lime and starfruit martinis and mojitos in green glassware and green hors d'oeuvres like mango papaya and mint pea soup shooters. Restaurant Associates, the museum's contract caterer, served a diverse dinner buffet (chicken francese, cedar plank Alaskan salmon with sweet chili jam and hearts of palm salad with.phparagus tips and ruby grapefruit) on S-shaped tables. Even the dessert had a green look: pistachio gelato in mini cones.
It wouldn't be a premiere party without a screening, and guests watched the first two episodes of the sixth—and final—season at the museum's theater before the party. And the DJ incorporated an element from the show into the entertainment: Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet"—the song in the new season's commercials—played several times during the night.
