Shirley Boettcher, an executive assistant at Telus Mobility and responsible for organizing the company's annual staff holiday fete, wanted a high-energy event to mark the end of 2005. So she transformed the Distillery District's Fermenting Cellar into a Studio 54-style playground and hired Opulence Catering & Event Management to bring her vision to life.Opulence owner Edith Jakobs planned the event with Elena Carson, the firm's event manager and stylist. Caged go-go dancers from Eden Planning and a Saturday Night Fever-inspired dance floor from Visual FX were among the decor the duo conceived to generate a 70's vibe. Other highlights included white pleather linen on the tables and an array of white, green, and purple (Telus' corporate colours), candles, lamps, buffet linens, and floral accents.
Telus staffers serving as greeters handed glowing fake jewelry from Incredible Novelties to new arrivals. In the V.I.P. lounge, funky white plastic chairs contrasted with square coffee tables topped by centerpiece bowls of grapefruit-size disco balls. Brushed aluminum tables with coloured tension fabric around the base served as buffet stations throughout the venue. Food served from the stations included carved Angus strip loin, honey-glazed Atlantic salmon, and Oriental noodles topped with a choice of vegetable, pork, or shrimp dim sum dumplings.
