Sometimes, it can be hard to hear servers' explanations of hors d'oeuvres over the din of event chatter or a DJ's pumping bass. Such was not the case at The Knot's "Knot-so-Typical Industry Event," which drew wedding pros to Miami's Studio 743 in late January. At the surrealistic event, servers from Hugh's Catering wore apple-shaped signage on their foreheads. The apples were printed with such phrases as: "Mini Beef Sliders With Deliciousness Inside," or, simply, "Smoked Salmon Blini." The servers also wore masks, and were encouraged not to speak.

Event producer Jamie Lipman, president and founder of Absolute—The Full Wedding & Event Planning Service, said her goal was to "create something that was both whimsical and bizarre." Working with staffers from The Knot, she "imagined what it would be like to have an event in a dream, and this was the result."
