Nearly 700,000 fans convened at the U.S.T.A. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens to watch tennis’s top stars compete at the 2017 U.S. Open. In 2018, the center will unveil the new Louis Armstrong Stadium, a 14,000-seat state-of-the-art venue. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the “Open Era” of tennis, when professionals and amateurs were finally allowed to compete against each other. Next: August 27-September 9, 2018

New York Road Runners hosts the famed New York City Marathon, with Tata Consultancy Services returning as the event’s title sponsor for the fourth consecutive year. More than one million people line the streets of all five boroughs to cheer on more than 50,000 athletes. Next: November 4, 2018

3. Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

More than 3,000 dogs from around the world competed in the 142nd annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which was attended by 20,000 spectators in February 2018. The show takes place over several days at Piers 92 and 94 and Madison Square Garden. Next: Winter 2019

4. Belmont Stakes

This year marks the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes, one of horseracing’s three Triple Crown events. While attendance is capped at 90,000 on race day, the event also features a three-day festival that includes 18 stakes races with purses totaling $9.5 million. Next: June 9, 2018

5. Five Boro Bike Tour

Every spring, 32,000 cyclists from all over the world participate in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour Presented by REI, which raises money for Bike New York’s free education programs. The 40-mile route takes riders on car-free streets throughout all five boroughs. Next: May 6, 2018
