Lighting was scarce and ample depending on where you stood at Surface magazine’s Avant Guardian photography exhibit, held on both levels of Splashlight Studios. The event showcased the work of eight amateur photographers, chosen by Surface editors and a panel of judges (Thom Browne and Lewis Blackwell among them), in 5- by 7-foot light boxes leaning against the venue walls. Beyond light emitted from the boxes and a few gobos on the wall, the event was light-free, creating shadowy effects throughout the rooms. Surface events director Carol Cho brought ISO Photography's Jacob Abramson on board to create a light installation made of 60 fluorescent light tubes, each 8 feet long, which cast a silvery glow over the second floor bar. Downstairs, event sponsor Lexus had a car on display, with a backdrop of blue and green square-shaped light projections. An artsy crowd of 1,500 enjoyed the Ketel One ice bar and self-serve noodles in plastic take out cartons.
