This Sunday, the Hammer Museum debuts “Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Lautner,” an exhibition that takes a comprehensive look at the architect’s nearly 60 years’ worth of work. The museum will display renderings, construction photographs, large-scale models, and animations, as well as short films that give viewers a better sense of the environments Lautner created. The impact Lautner had on Southern California design can be seen in architecturally significant homes such as the Elrod dwelling in Palm Springs and the spaceship-like Malin residence in Los Angeles. In conjunction with the exhibit, which runs through October 12, the museum will offer a full-color catalogue, lectures on contemporary architecture, and walking tours of notable modernist homes.
