June 16, 2014: Why Charity Golf Events Remain Popular, Washington’s Favorite Fund-Raising Venues, Cities Compete for George Lucas Museum

1. WHY CHARITY GOLF EVENTS REMAIN POPULAR: More groups now host charity golf tournaments as a reliable way to raise money—in 2011 there were about 143,000 events that raised $3.9 billion—and educate players on the cause they are supporting. The New York Times: “Yet these tournaments are not simple to organize. And it can be easy for nonprofits to be blinded by the sums raised at the high end of charity golf, which can top $1 million per tournament. The usual reality is less. The National Golf Foundation report found that the average amount per tournament was $26,300—not chump change but not a great return on investment either.” http://nyti.ms/1lrWprf

2. WASHINGTON’S FAVORITE FUND-RAISING VENUES: One often-repeated fact from the losing campaign of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is that he spent more money at steak houses than his opponent did on his entire campaign. Washington offers no shortage of restaurants and bars suited for political fund-raisers and meetings, and Politico rounded up 10 of most popular venues. “While expensive, it’s not seen as a waste of cash: Those fundraisers are crucial investments in party building and donor maintenance that bring in far more cash.” http://politi.co/1omZRpp

3. CITIES COMPETE FOR GEORGE LUCAS MUSEUM: Los Angeles has joined the list of cities trying to attract a museum planned by Star Wars director George Lucas, and proposed demolishing the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena to make room for it. Los Angeles Times: “So far, Lucas has considered San Francisco and Chicago as possible locations for the museum, which is expected to have a price tag in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The museum will feature art from his personal collection—including works by Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and Maxwell Parrish—as well as exhibitions on the motion picture industry and digital media.” http://lat.ms/1xVqqnu
