Design Firm Anniversary Has Cool Projections

April 21, 2004
Design firm Trollbäck & Company selected the Art Directors Club as the site—and blank slate—for its fifth anniversary party. Swedish founder Jakob Trollbäck, a former DJ and nightclub owner, wanted the event to reflect the sensibility of the firm, known for its diverse range of projects, from snowboard graphics to the film titles for A Beautiful Mind, to the recently unveiled logo for NYC2012, the committee working to bring the Olympics to New York.
Trollbäck's eclectic style was transposed onto the white walls of the venue, with projections from the firm providing ever-changing décor. The venue, as well as the white bar and banquettes from Kadan Productions, provided a canvas for Trollbäck’s projections—which ranged from graphic color bars to a fire-colored roses floating in water. Even Jose Conde y Ola Fresca, the Latin jazz band that performed early in the evening, dressed in white, blending in with the projection that surrounded them.

Networking seemed to take a backseat to having fun—in fact, the only sign of Trollbäck's corporate work was a small projection of some of the firm's campaigns, tucked away on a small column in the center of the room. The young crowd—mostly hipsters and art types—munched on Art of Eating's assortment of hors d'oeuvres, such as cajun shrimp with lemon dill sauce, duck quesadillas and tasty seared pepper-crusted tuna on wonton chips.

After a few brave souls danced to Jose Conde's jazz rendition of "Summertime," DJ Spooky moved well away from the Billie Holiday classic by starting his set with House of Pain’s "Jump Around." Cocktails, Latin music, early 90’s rap, whimsical graphics and a hipper-than-thou crowd—perhaps a bit disjointed, but strangely well-suited to Trollbäck's sensibility.
