New Jersey Dinosaur Park Promotes Upcoming Opening to Football Fans

In May 2012, New Jersey's Laurel Hill Park will be home to a new educational venue, the 20-acre outdoor science exhibit known as Field Station: Dinosaurs. The Jurassic park created for kids and adults by Guy Gsell, founding director of Discovery Times Square and former managing director of the Two River Theater Company in Red Bank, New Jersey, will house more than 30 life-size animatronic dinosaurs amid woods and trails at the foot of the 150-million-year-old rock formation. To build up public anticipation for the new attraction in the New Jersey Meadowlands, the team at marketing agency Axiom Communications took a 14-foot Tyrannosaurus rex puppet to the MetLife Stadium to interact with football fans on Sunday.

A press conference at the new venue brought out Michael Gonnelli, mayor of Secaucus, New Jersey; county executive Thomas A. DeGise of Hudson County; and Judy Ross, Meadowlands Liberty Convention & Visitors Bureau director. The organizers took the T-Rex to N.J. Transit's Secaucus Junction station, where they posed the realistic-looking creature at the turnstiles before taking it aboard a train to the stadium. At the sports arena, the dinosaur puppet roamed the grounds, interacting with fans and tailgaters before the New York Giants played the Green Bay Packers.

'Because of the nature of Vibiana and the way the venue lays out, projection was the way to go,' said Rembac. 'We felt it would yield a much bigger impact than a ceiling install or anything too complicated on the tables.' Sterling Engagements worked closely with the venue's in-house AV team to produce 'scenes' that would subtly shift throughout the night: For arrivals, it depicted a snowlike journey to the destination; for the program, it was a forest that made guests feel like they were staring out a window at a perfect winter setting; and for the party, the projections morphed into a fun, festive, and celebratory atmosphere. 'We modified the overhead and front perspective within each look, and as the evening progressed, so did our surroundings—which was really fun,' she noted.
