Midtown’s classy Supper Club was transformed into an Art Deco extravaganza for the premiere of De-Lovely, the MGM biopic about Cole Porter. MGM's senior vice president of special projects Adam Keen brought in Wendy Creed Productions to turn the bilevel venue into a 1930's-style setting to match the film.
So Creed and her crew revamped the entrance, putting the film's logo on the marquee and decorating the facade with blowups of film stills. Inside, the second floor was fitted with custom-made 11-foot murals also showcasing scenes from De-Lovely, and Creed and company's ornate dining room design included bronzed statues and giant peonies. Towering golden columns surrounded the main floor, and Creed scattered candelabras throughout the dining space. Cream-colored rose arrangements designed by Jennifer McGarigle at Floral Art matched the champagne matte satin cloths from Resource One and Finelite
Productions' lighting set an intimate, romanticized tone for the evening.
A 12-piece orchestra accompanied the vocal stylings of film co-star John Barrowman, who belted out such Porter classics as the title track and "Anything Goes" on a stage custom-built by Creed's production company. Illuminated from within, the stage also included vintage 1930's music stands for the band.
Meanwhile, guests including De-Lovely stars Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd and director Irwin Winkler dined on an extensive menu from Sonnier & Castle, which included wild mushroom risotto, crabcakes and chicken skewers with chipotle aioli and cashews. Champagne and Manhattans complimented the menu and the theme.
