Being environmentally friendly in an elegant way isn't an easy feat, yet the Environmental Media awards managed just that for their presentation and after-party. Celebrity presenters such as Daryl Hannah, David Spade, Kristin Davis, and Nicole Richie offered tips on how to save the earth while giving awards to those in the entertainment industry who take action and inspire others to protect the environment. When the ceremony in the Ebell ended, the 1,000 guests poured into the courtyard and ballroom for the party. The courtyard seemed an especially appropriate setting, with its lush greenery decorated by soft lighting and earthy table linens.
While sipping organic wine from Bonterra Vineyards and organic Square One Vodka, guests could choose from more than 50 organic dishes prepared by a host of local eateries, caterers, and grocers. The offerings ranged from a warm potato salad with leeks and smoked mussels (from Campanile) to cheddar cheese cake with plum glaze (Horizon Organic) to molasses-braised and cornmeal-crusted beef short ribs with pear and celeriac slaw. Sponsors donated the food, alcohol, and labor, and at the end of the night any uneaten food was given to Angel Harvest and distributed to local shelters.
In addition to mingling and eating, guests could bid at a silent auction on items including a stay at the eco-conscious Fairmont Resorts. And everyone was encouraged to pick up a gift bag made from recycled materials, provided by presenting sponsor Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., and to browse the product stations to stock up on environmentally friendly goodies.
"Our goal of being organic, sustainable, and eco-smart is respected and incorporated into almost every.phpect of the party," says Patie Maloney, vice president of the Environmental Media Association and its chief event planner. "The quality level of elegance does not need to be sacrificed. It is celebrated in a very green way."
