At the Arena Stage’s "Golden Gala: A Glittering Evening of American Musical Theater" Monday night, the approach was to go literal.
So Andre Wells, whose company Events by Andre Wells produced the event, brought the gold and the glitter. He sought a contrast from last year’s opening gala, which featured clean lines and minimalist design to mimic the space itself.
“We did everything in golds, from bright golds to metallics to matte,” Wells said. “We did a luxurious, really beautiful, lush and over-the-top feel.” The details included a gold carpet for arrivals, gilded topiary arrangements, and flower arrangements that included only yellow buds including tulips, roses, and other spring flowers.
The evening, which celebrated the performing arts, started in multiple lounges where Design Cuisine Caterers served hors d’oeuvres and three spring-inspired cocktails. Howard Franklin Music provided a jazz quintet playing bebop and other upbeat sounds. Later the 250 guests moved on to a performance from two-time Tony Award nominee Kate Baldwin and composer Sheldon Harnick. A four-course dinner and silent auction followed. The event ended at 11 p.m.
WUSA9 news anchor J.C. Hayward served as chairwoman, and the event honored Senators Thad Cochran, Republican of Mississippi, and Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, with the American Voice Awards, which honor elected officials who advocate for the arts.
