March 7, 2016: MTV to Announce Movie Awards Nominations on Snapchat, What Millennials Want From Event Swag, How Social Media Could Doom House Tour Fund-Raisers

1. MTV TO ANNOUNCE MOVIE AWARDS NOMINATIONS ON SNAPCHAT DISCOVER: MTV, which likes to experiment with social media platforms popular with its target audience, will announce the nominations for its Movie Awards on Tuesday using Snapchat Discover. Broadcasting & Cable: “MTV parent Viacom last month made a deal to handle advertising sales for Snapchat and increase the amount of content it produces for the messaging app. MTV is also working with Google so that fans can vote in the Movie of the Year category by typing the keyword ‘MTV Vote’  into the Google search bar on desktop computers, tablets and smartphones.” http://bit.ly/1VWri5F

2. WHAT MILLENNIALS WANT FROM EVENT SWAG: Want to entice millennials to attend your events? Water bottles and T-shirts top the swag, according to data from Splash, which sells experience marketing software. Other insights into millennials' minds include how they use social media at events and why they choose to attend brand-sponsored events. Adweek: "The brands winning over the millennial generation are delivering experiences, not just things," said Ben Hindman, co-founder and C.E.O. of Splash. "The savviest marketers understand the crucial link between events and brand loyalty—particularly when it comes to millennials. If you're not creating experiences and memories, you're not building anything." http://bit.ly/1ROtLho

3. HOW SOCIAL MEDIA COULD DOOM HOUSE TOUR FUND-RAISERS: After more than 30 years, a tour of homes in the tony Brooklyn Heights neighborhood in New York has shut its doors, citing concerns over invasion of privacy in the digital age. While the annual tour, run by the Brooklyn Heights Association, has long banned photos, the policy has become too difficult to enforce. The New York Times: “Real estate websites like StreetEasy and Trulia have made it relatively simple to search for a home’s sale price, floor plans and even its owner’s identity, which may have turned off new participants. … For some homeowners, the possibility of widespread social media exposure prompted concerns that their homes would become easy targets for burglars.” http://nyti.ms/1p1XUA9
