Decor Is Clear at DATA Fund-raiser

Kate Hudson hosted the inaugural benefit for OneXOne during the Toronto International Film Festival, supporting the Lou Adler Foundation.

February 15, 2006
The Globe and Mail observed (rather cattily) in its coverage of OneXOne, the Kate Hudson-hosted fund-raiser held at the Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery District, that "charity is the new yoga." It seems to us that the beautiful people have been taking up charity with a passion of late, and OneXOne was nothing if not a huge draw. The event—hosted by the Lou Adler Foundation, which supports cancer charities, and Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa (DATA), a nonprofit organization cofounded by Bobby Shriver, nephew of former U.S. president John Kennedy, and U2 singer Bono—attracted a slew of celebrities in town for the Toronto International Film Festival, among them Woody Harrelson, Cameron Crowe, Kurt Russell, Elle MacPherson, Claire Danes, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Orlando Bloom.
Joelle Adler, president of Diesel Canada (one of the event's sponsors), founded the Lou Adler Foundation two years ago after losing her husband to cancer. Adler hired event planner Jeffry Roick of McNabb Roick Events to help with preparation and organization of the event. She also enlisted two PR companies, Brill Communications and Brickman Entertainment Group, to build awareness of the event. Tables at the gala dinner cost $150,000 or $250,000 a pop, while after-party tickets went for $100 each. More than $1 million was raised before the night was through.

Arriving dinner ticket-holders crossed a white carpet threshold and were escorted by volunteers to their seats in the main space, covered in white tenting by Advanced Tent Rentals. Prior to the meal, many guests strolled indoors to the silent auction room, embellished with lounge decor from Signature Rentals and flowing water walls from Solar Aquatics. The decor in the dining area included a number of clear elements, including Signature's Philippe Starck Ghost chairs and clear stemware from Chair-man Mills, which also chipped in green-hued dinner plates, accentuated by green lighting from Westbury National Show Systems. Other decor included white window-pane-patterned linen from Around the Table and McNabb Roick's centrepieces of long-stemmed dendrobium orchids in a base of tropical green foliage.

After dinner, the African Children's Choir, Chantal Kreviazuk, and Our Lady Peace performed for the star-studded crowd. Rumours circulated that Bono, who was in attendance, would perform as well, but he never did. For the balance of the evening, music was supplied by DJ AM, a k a Adam Goldstein, fianc? of reality TV star Nicole Richie.
