Hundreds of Torontonians lined up in the rain Wednesday to get a free Brita water filter during an Earth Day promotion at Yonge-Dundas Square. The company gave away 3,600 pitchers at the afternoon event, which was scheduled to take place from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Volunteers even handed out the water pitchers used to create an eight- by 72-foot visual display that spelled out "Filter for Good"—the name of a campaign designed to educate Canadians about the impact of bottled water waste—but still the supply ran out shortly after 5 p.m. The remainder of those in line received $10 vouchers toward the purchase of a water filter.
"Since Filter for Good launched last spring, thousands of Canadians have taken the online pledge to reduce their bottled water waste by more than an estimated 11 million bottles and counting," the organization stated in a press release. The company is aiming to collect 25 million pledges. Brita also gave away 3,600 water pitchers during an Earth Hour event earlier this month.
