The special event industry lost one of its most colorful characters last month. Jim Watkins, a pioneer in confetti design who promoted his products while wearing a clown-like costume at trade shows, died of a heart attack on October 21. A native of Gaithersburg, Md., who billed himself as a "master confettiologist," Watkins created a product called Flutter Fetti in his home for an Anheuser-Busch event. He went on to supply major events including the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Ronee Holmes of Parti Line of New Orleans now owns and operates Flutter Fetti, which has been a division of Parti Line since last summer. As a special tribute to Watkins, mourners at his funeral launched blasts of confetti at the conclusion of the ceremony.
