1. COUNTRY HOUSE WINS KENTUCKY DERBY AFTER DISQUALIFICATION: On Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, Derby favorite Maximum Security was disqualified for interference, a first for the event, resulting in second-place finisher Country House taking home the roses. Los Angeles Times: “‘We had a lengthy review of the race,’ said Barbara Borden, chief steward of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. ‘We interviewed affected riders. We determined that the seven horse [Maximum Security] drifted out and impacted the progress of No. 1 [War Of Will], in turn interfering with the 18 [Long Range Toddy] and 21 [Bodexpress]. Those horses were all impacted by the interference. Therefore, we unanimously determined to disqualify No. 7 and place him behind the 18.’”
2. WHY THERE’S NO PARSLEY AT THE MET GALA: Guests in attendance at tonight’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit in New York will need to adhere to a strict set of rules established by host Anna Wintour, including don’t bring your spouse and don’t use your cellphone or take selfies. Even the caterer has to follow guidelines and is forbidden from serving specific items. New York Post: “There are certain ingredients and dishes that the gala’s caterer is instructed to avoid, such as parsley (‘you don’t want that stuck in your teeth,’ a former Vogue staffer told The Post in 2016), onion and garlic (bad breath) and messy appetizers like bruschetta. Last year’s special guest Cardinal Dolan found the food so paltry that he sent out for street hot dogs during the event, which was definitely not kosher.”
3. MADONNA HONORED WITH AWARD AT GLAAD EVENT: At the 30th-annual GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday at the New York Hilton Midtown, Madonna accepted the Advocate for Change Award. During her speech, the singer spoke about her early days in New York, finding acceptance within the L.G.B.T.Q. community, and the impact of the AIDS epidemic at that time. Variety: "'It made me feel sad, it made me feel sick, it made me want to kick everybody’s ass,’ she said. ‘To quote a song from my new record, life is a circle, death and loss brought a new life, brought me to life, brought me to love,’ she said. ‘And so we are back to the beginning of my speech, the importance of love. Because as soon as you understand what it means to love, you understand what it takes to become a human being. And it is every human being’s duty to fight, to advocate, to do whatever we can and whatever it takes.'"
