1. WHY AUTO SHOWS DON'T NEED BOOTH BABES: Time's senior editor Matt Vella makes the case for getting rid of female models at the New York International Auto Show. "We need to ban the 'booth babes.' The auto companies are increasingly being run by some of the smartest, most interesting executives in business (of any kind). It’s time they ditch this outmoded practice and do it as fast as they presumably blurt out that electric cars are a great idea in mixed company. If nothing else, the auto makers can look at the bottom line. Some trustworthy-seeming marketing experts have figured out these women don’t actually help sell anything." http://ti.me/1gLg2no
2. MARKETING TRENDS AT SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVALS: This year, in a bid to connect with a millennial audience, brands will once again spend a great deal of their marketing dollars sponsoring music fests and hosting activations on and off festival grounds. With many looking to stand out amidst the competitive crowd, AdAge has identified key trends, including holding events beyond the festival grounds, offering useful amenities like hair-washing stations, creating content from parties, and participating in push notifications on official mobile apps. http://bit.ly/1gBcLGV
3. CHANEL SHOW HEADS TO DUBAI: Karl Lagerfeld has chosen an island off the coast of Dubai as the site of his next show. According to Women's Wear Daily, the designer will debut his latest cruise collection for Chanel on May 13 at a spot known as the Island, where the event will take place indoors and partly outdoors. http://bit.ly/QxkOOB
4. HBO CREATES DIGITAL THRONE: Taking advantage of the popularity of Game of Thrones—and the show's socially engaged fan base—HBO teamed up with agency 360i to build a 3-D, digital interactive model of the Iron Throne using viewer tweets. As added incentive, the TV network has a contest for those who post to Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram with the #TaketheThrone hashtag—the winner will get a trip to San Diego Comic-Con.
