Tucked along narrow Stanhope Street at the edge of the South End, Red Lantern is a pan-Asian restaurant and lounge that opened earlier this month. Available for daytime buyout and in the evening with restrictions, the venue offers signature menu items such as wood-fired steaks, sushi rolls, dumplings, and wok dishes.
Guests access the space through custom-made, 10-foot wooden doors and pass beneath an eight-foot lantern at the entryway. Hand-collected seashells from Vietnam line the walls, and oversize Buddha statues dot the lounge and dining areas. Decorative birdcage lanterns dangle from the 22-foot ceilings.
The space holds 225 for seated functions and 275 for cocktail receptions. A private dining room, complete with a 40-inch flat screen for video plus a sound system and microphones, accommodates 40 seated and 50 standing. The restaurant also has a semiprivate raised area that holds 100 standing and 70 seated.
Red Lantern is the latest venture from Big Night Entertainment Group, which owns nightlife destinations at Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Tosca restaurants in Hingham.
