TODAY'S CALENDAR: The TED Conference kicks off in Long Beach, California

* INCOMING *

1. INSIDE THE OSCARS: From Los Angeles bureau chief Alesandra Dubin: The Billy Crystal-hosted 84th annual Academy Awards rolled into town last night, blanketing the city with related events and gridlock traffic around Hollywood and West Hollywood, where many of the big-ticket parties were concentrated. Vanity Fair's bash lit up the Sunset Tower hotel and closed two lanes on a crawling Sunset Boulevard.  Just to the west, the Weinstein Company's bash drew a crowd to the Mondrian, where the crowd chanted and cheered as the company cleaned up awards including best actor, actress, director, and picture. Guests were giddy when the party's viewing portion gave way to the after-party, in the mood to pose in a photo booth stocked with “The Artist”-inspired props like vintage hats and plush Uggie dogs. Down the road to the south, the Elton John AIDS Foundation fund-raiser at its new West Hollywood Park venue also drew a lively, celebrity-mobbed crowd for the dinner and auction. The event was followed by an after-party with a performance by Foster the People performance and was wrapping up just as Maxim kicked off its decidedly unstuffy bash up high in the hills over Sunset Plaza.

WHAT EVENT PROS THOUGHT: We asked some readers to give us their critiques of last night's show. Some highlights:

David Solsbery, executive director of design at Hargrove in Lanham, Maryland: “The Art Deco stage set looked great to the live audience, but it was a mess on camera. It did not work for the close up head shots. When designing a stage set that will be on camera, one must consider what the audience sees and what the camera sees. All that is left when the event is over is what was captured on film.”

Andrea Wynn Schall, owner of Los Angeles-based full-service event planning company A Wynning Event, which has served as awards event supervisor for the SAG Awards since 1999: “What I loved was the Cirque du Soleil segment of the show. Having hired Cirque acts in the past for events, I appreciate and understand the strength and beauty of their talent. The choreography was incredible and such eye candy for the show.”

Dennis Remer, production designer with lighting company Frost Chicago: “I did not like the ‘band’ in the opera boxes. I agree with giving the musicians the exposure that they rarely receive. However, I would have exaggerated the use of the full orchestra pit and incorporated them into the set.”

2. SOCIAL MARKETING GAP: Two research studies reveal that social marketers are not as in tune with what consumers want and need. "When social consumers were asked what they want from social engagement, their desires were clear: deals, special content, and rewards based on their engagement. Customer service ranks dead last in their responses. When social marketers were asked the same question, they indicated customer service as the benefit they felt social consumers wanted most. Customer needs were well back in the pack of professional presumptions."
