* INCOMING *
1. MTV V.M.A.S TO STAPLES: The network announced Tuesday it would hold the 2012 Video Music Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles September 6—the same night President Obama is scheduled to accept the Democratic presidential nomination at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina—but that it would move up its normal start time.
CNN: "A source close to MTV told CNN the station would air the awards from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern, rather than their usual 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. 'to avoid conflict with the Democratic National Convention proceedings that evening.'" http://bit.ly/JGUlGr
2. CHICAGO PREPS FOR NATO: Bloomberg BusinessWeek: "Chicago is prepared for at least 10,000 demonstrators [during the NATO summit May 20-21]. The [police] department’s strategy will be to deploy officers in ordinary uniforms with instructions to deal with protesters on an individual basis … reserving the right to alter its tactics as the situation warrants. … The department also has acquired two long-range acoustical devices…The truck-mounted units made by San Diego-based LRAD Corp., can deliver a burst of sound intolerable to the human ear." http://buswk.co/JDTvKI
3. BEHIND BIG EVENTS: From assistant editor Rose Chevalier: The Event Leadership Institute brought out the planners who work on some of the biggest events in the country, including the Super Bowl and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, for a program Monday night. The panel covered topics including how the planners source vendors and staff, and how they solve last-minute problems. Here's the story: http://bit.ly/IW6Uws
4. FASHION SHOW FOR AMFAR IN CANNES: The Hollywood Reporter: "For the May 24 event at Hotel du Cap, organizers … hired former Vogue Paris editor in chief and longtime stylist Carine Roitfeld to stage a runway show featuring models in 20 designer dresses made for the event, all black." http://bit.ly/Jd5Qbn

* ABOUT LAST NIGHT: THE CLIOS *
From editor in chief Chad Kaydo: Joan Rivers used some of her favorite four-letter words, in jokes about Preparation H, John Travolta, and Casey Anthony, as host of the Clio awards, which returned to the American Museum of Natural History in New York Tuesday. After considerable recent retooling, the evening stuck to the basics of last year's format: an abbreviated award show presenting only a select few awards, followed by a party (in the whale room) where other winners could pick up their trophies and pose with them for photos. The word on Joan Rivers from event staffers: a total pro, even saltier at rehearsal.

* ABOUT LAST NIGHT: UPFRONT WEEK, DAY 2 *
From news editor Anna Sekula: ABC might have made a big splash by once again putting Jimmy Kimmel on stage for its presentation Tuesday at Avery Fisher Hall, but it was the Spanish-language networks that dominated the second day of Upfront Week. After scoring the first ad deal of the upfronts last week, Univision had plenty to brag about and entertained an estimated 1,400 guests at the New Amsterdam Theatre with a rousing performance by Shakira before heading to Cipriani 42nd Street for a lively lunch reception. Telemundo also upped the ante, staging live telenovelas during its outing at the Al Hirschfeld Theater.
