April 9, 2013: Guantanamo-Themed Coachella Event, Vine Catching on for Marketing, Has the Final Four Grown Too Large?

1. GUANTANAMO-THEMED COACHELLA EVENT: Pushing the limits of taste, Flaunt magazine and Le Baron advertised a pop-up bar with a Guantanamo theme at Coachella this weekend, promising "pleasurable torture." Soon after the racy invite became public, sponsor Smashbox Studios pulled out of the event and the magazine issued a statement saying "we value and respect the public's concern and are taking action." 2. HAS THE FINAL FOUR GROWN TOO LARGE?: Trying to create the biggest spectacle for its men's basketball championship, which crowned Louisville the winner last night in Atlanta, the N.C.A.A. has moved to bigger venues. But bigger isn't better, according to one columnist. Grantland: "It's all too far away. The baskets look like they're drifting in space. The seats are so distant that, when you shoot at them, the closest fans look like they're sitting behind the walls of an aquarium—which sort of makes you, the player, like, the fish. … The size of the event of the Final Four—and the corresponding unbridled greed that goes with it—forced the event to move into the domes, and playing the games in domes has completely destroyed the act most basic to the game itself." http://es.pn/14RsJLw

3. VINE CATCHING ON FOR MARKETING: Brands such as Vokswagen and Peanut Butter & Company are finding that Twitter's Vine is effective for marketing events. During this past weekend's New York International Auto Show, Volkswagon's agency, SS+K, created a "VineViewer" where people could upload short videos of the cars on display. Similarly, Peanut Butter & Company used the app to promote National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day. Ad Week: "It utilized a Vine that shows how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with the brand's products. During the course of the day, according to the company, it garnered 300,000 impressions and, more importantly, 6,000-plus coupon downloads." http://bit.ly/10IeMKg

4. ACM AWARDS SET RECORDS FOR VIEWERS, VOTING: It was a record-breaking year for the 48th annual Academy of Country Music awards Sunday, with a combined 1.1 million fans casting their votes for both the entertainer of the year and new artist of the year categories. The event, held at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and broadcast live on CBS, led the night in viewers and demographics with the event’s highest measures in viewers since 1998, in households and adults 18-49 since 2001, and in adults 25-54 since 2000, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same-day ratings. acmcountry.com
