1. TWITTER LAUNCHES AD PLATFORM TIED TO LIVE EVENTS: Brands that want to connect with people who are tweeting about live events have a new tool to market to them in real time. Twitter’s “event targeting” feature, launched Thursday, includes features such as a calendar of global events, historical data on how the events have performed on Twitter, and fast activation tools for marketers. Marketing Land: “Up to now, marketers interested in going after Twitter audiences during major events like the Super Bowl, Grammys, the FIFA World Cup or Wimbledon were limited to mostly manual efforts and guesswork about what hashtags, keywords, and accounts to target. With event targeting, Twitter said, marketers now have a tool to simplify, inform, and automate that process.” http://mklnd.com/1LFZ4cm

TOURISM INDUSTRY: The Special Olympics World Games—the biggest athletic event since Los Angeles hosted the 1984 Summer Olympics—are expected to generate $387 million in spending as well as a promotional boost to hotels, restaurants, and bars downtown. Los Angeles Times: “The Special Olympics are expected to have a bigger economic effect on L.A. county than the 2011 NBA All-Star Game ($85 million in spending), the 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards ($42.6 million), the 2013 Academy Awards ($67 million), and the 2013 Tournament of Roses football game and parade ($306 million), according to past studies by the economics research firm Micronomics.” http://lat.ms/1RUSnIs
3. DEMOCRATS TO ACCEPT LOBBYIST AND P.A.C. DONATIONS TO PAY FOR CONVENTION: The Democratic National Committee will collect donations from political action committees and lobbyists to pay for its national convention in Philadelphia, and for other costs related to the 2016 presidential campaign, lifting a ban the has been in place since 2008. The New York Times: “Allowing PAC and lobbyist donations to the joint fund-raising committee was something that Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign encouraged, people briefed on the discussions said. Mrs. Clinton has spoken openly about her frustration with the way that Jeb Bush, one of her Republican rivals, raised funds for his so-called super PAC by delaying his formal campaign declaration, even as he toured the country as an all-but-official contender.” http://nyti.ms/1Mp1qgf
