The Starmaze Projector, a self-contained box that can make any room look like a planetarium, was premiered by TLC Creative Special Effects in October at Las Vegas' Lighting Dimensions International (LDI) tradeshow. Standing 10- by three- by six-inches and weighing less than five pounds, the product includes a 58-milliwatt laser that projects your choice of either green or red stars and an LED light that projects blue nebular patterns onto a 30-foot-square projection area. Sold at $2,400 each or rentable at $300 to $500 per event, this latest technological advancement can be placed within a bar to light it up, pointed at a tent's ceiling so that guests can feel like they're outside when the lights have been dimmed, or in whatever other clever method the planner can conceive. Customization of the box's exterior can be achieved, but the projected images themselves cannot. The item uses regular 110-watt power and is available with DMX options. —Albert del Toral
